Today I have been blessed with that most rare and dangerous things in the life of any minister. An empty day in my diary (no that does not mean I had nothing to do, cheeky. No it meant that I had some time which was not already spoken for to do some reflecting). After I had done some tidying and organising in the office I decided to have a bit of a drive round on my own and get to know the area. I even popped in to Tesco to have a look at mobile phones for a work mobile (no idea which one or how I am going to do it yet, but my own mobile number will not be known).
This afternoon though I have been thinking about what I can do at my churches. Broadway and Greenfield my work revolves around young people and families and a few well established groups, but The Haven has a slightly different remit. After looking through their website I noticed that they didn't seem to have any house groups or Bible study groups.
This got me thinking. What sort of house groups or Bible studies could I help start at the Have (if indeed they do need some). Then an idea hit me. Beer and Bible. Bible studies in the local pub!
Now I know there are some who would say "Oh yes indeedy that is the most superb idea ever!" and others who would say "Mixing the Bible and drink is a terrible idea and deeply un-Christian" and many responses in between.
My own personal response is "It could work, and there are echoes of what Jesus would have done in this idea"
So what do you think?

I think it is an idea worthy of some research!!!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea Jon. In churches these days, there seems to be an unbalance between attending by men and women. What I mean is worship etc can be geared to the more female mind/acceptance etc.. songs saying 'I love you' etc could be uncomfortable for some men. Thus creating space where you can reach others over a pint is an ideal idea! Not forgetting though that if I go for a drink - often it's a pint for me to!!
ReplyDeleteWorth a try I reckon. Why not? Go for it!
